"Seeking

One of five movies featuring Nicolas Cage in 2011, Seeking Justice, directed by Roger Donaldson (The Bank Job, The Recruit) is exactly what I was expecting. Filled with action, this "B Movie" is enjoyable but never quite ramps up to be amazing. What saves it from being terrible is the great cast, including Guy Pearce (who keeps pretty busy himself) and the normally vacant, January Jones (AMC's Mad Men, X-Men: First Class). Unfortunately, Nicolas Cage seems to hold back the crazy, otherwise, it would have been one heck of a ride.

Will Gerard, (Academy-Award winner Nicolas Cage, Drive Angry, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance) is a happily married man whose quiet life is turned upside-down when his wife, Laura (January Jones, AMC's "Mad Men," X-Men First Class), is brutally attacked while leaving work. At the hospital, waiting for news about his wife's condition, Will meets Simon, (Golden Globe(r) nominee Guy Pearce, The King's Speech, LA Confidential) a concerned stranger who offers to aid Will's family in finding her attacker, in exchange for a favor, sometime in the future. Overcome with grief and fear, Will consents to the deal, unwittingly pulling himself into a vigilante organization that will lead to frightening and deadly consequences.

As a scholarly man, the character of Will Gerard is far too clever in many situations. His actions are more of a former criminal and are terribly unbelievable. I felt like I was watching Nicolas Cage, not a character he was playing. Laura, Will's wife, however, is a fantastic character and even though she's a victim and vulnerable, I really liked her spirit. January Jones really drew from the strength of her character and in doing so, there were a few scenes where she really shined.

Having a short run at the box office, Seeking Justice will find an audience in those craving the Cage.

While I think it's terrific that Nicholas Cage stays gainfully employed by having made, for example, this interesting range of 5 graphic action films last year, my favorite Cage films happen to be the 2 he made with John Woo - Face-Off and Windtalkers.
